What is Spirituality?

By Alice Grist

Nobody can dictate to you what your spirituality is, or how it should look.

That said it is helpful, especially in your early spiritual years, to find out what spirituality is to other people.
That way you can take what works, dress it up in your clothes and accessorize as per your specific requirements!

Here is my spiritual wardrobe laid bare, one thing is for sure I don’t team my spirituality with tie dye or finger bells.

I’m an utterly modern spiritual girl and my modern life is where I need to be and it where my spiritual lessons lie.

So as I sit here, cat on lap, blue nail varnish tapping away, and lip gloss sloppily applied on a sunny Sunday afternoon, know that your spirituality can be you, it is you, you are spirit and there’s no need to dress up, or become a stereotyped role.

Honey, you are as spiritual as they come, you may just not realize it yet!

Now without wishing to sound too handbags and gladrags, here is how my spirituality plays out on a daily basis.
Spirituality first and foremost has been a wild trip into getting to know myself.

It beats a few dozen counseling sessions hands down.

Spirituality has saved my soul and at the same time rendered me utterly sane.
My eyes are clear, my mind is astute and I don’t worry, daydream or wish for a better life, in the same way that I did before my spiritual yearnings kicked in.

I know myself, which is so cool, because previous to this I didn’t realize that I didn’t know myself! Knowing myself is one of the top side effects of a spiritual life!

Spirituality, may be a lone and personal pursuit in the first instance, but being social creatures it is inevitable that our spirituality is taken into society, our relationships and even the workplace!

I have my team at work fully enjoying the benefits of angel cards!

Spirituality fills you with love, and as you become happier in your own beliefs you may find you are drawn to help other people, either with their spirituality, or just because, as a spiritual being you can’t help but help!
It sounds cheesy but my spirituality has made me a better person, I’m kinder, more considerate and a tonne more empathetic.

I feel so deeply for all humanity. Show me a tragic human life and I’ll show you tears.

Same goes for animals and the environment, I’m just a big blubbering love machine, and I do what I can to help people, situations and good causes.
I am now officially a real softie.

Spirituality is about being in love with life, even though on occasion that life kicks you when you are down.

It is about making efforts to see things from a spiritual perspective when all you really want to do is run away and hide in a large glass of Chardonnay.
It is about learning to understand the wonder of symbols, messages and signs from spirit, guides, angels and the natural spiritual universe and applying them your everyday existence and to your decisions big and small.

Spirituality is about sharing your love and learning in a modest, caring and generous manner.
It is about treating all others as you would treat your most cherished child and then some.

It’s about knowing that we are all connected, so that if you hurt your neighbor you hurt yourself.

It’s about learning the power of thought, the intrigue of divination, the wonder of healing.

Spirituality is about getting to know the real you inside and out.
The you that is not encumbered by fashion, makeup, cash flow problems or a nice new handbag.

Spirituality heightens your intuition like you would not believe, and as a result you make less mistakes.

I’m by no means perfect, but if I ignore my intuition things fail to work out. Intuition is one of my favorite spiritual tools and helps make decision-making easier too!

As an indecisive Libra, anything that helps with decision-making is a winner in my opinion!
Spirituality is freedom from worry and an inner faith, that no matter how bad it gets you always know that there is a good reason for it.
Life becomes a lesson, and I have become a willing pupil.

Occasionally that lesson is damned hard, but if it’s got to be learned then who am I to argue!

Spirituality is about finding something ‘spiritual’ in every event.
It is about realizing that all events good and bad are sent to help us to learn, to grow and to eventually become wiser souls.

For me, Spirituality is my saving grace. It is a wonderland of amazing stuff, mixed with the fun, frolics and nightmares that every day life holds.
My spirituality is a human based, nature-loving exploration of all things divine within myself and in all that surrounds me.

It is finding the wonder in everything that happens and everyone I meet.
It is knowing that no matter what crap is thrown at me, I will learn from it and I will grow.

Spirituality is fun and it is fearless. It is something I highly recommend.

No confirmation on the fluffy clouded angels

Whilst I cannot confirm or deny that a heaven full of angels, fluffy clouds and mesmerizing music exists, I can tell you I believe that there is something utterly wondrous beyond this life.

I believe there is a place that is our true home, and that fosters us, repairs us, teaches us and then sends us back to earth for another ‘go’ at living this up and down life.

I do love this crazy human life.
Yes I want to bring as much spirituality into that as I can, but I don’t want to be floating round on a cloud ushering pixies to my side to sugar coat my response, my living and my reactions.

What I do want is to explore my spirituality from a human perspective.
It is easy to be spiritual when you remember one key fact, you are spiritual, because you are spirit.

Spirituality is not some weird alien concept that only Deepak Chopra and other Gurus can access.

It is you.

You are spirit, you are here to experience humanity, but inside the humanity you are a perfect little shining soul.

It is not our time to float away into the ether, and so let’s explore what spirit is, through the unique eyes of somebody who is real, solid, prone to crying at life’s cruelties and ready to face real life with a pair of killer heels and a dose of spirituality always in her heart!

What does spirituality mean to you?

I love it! ‘you are spiritual, because you are spirit.’ I agree with you, we are spirit in human bodies, learning through our mistakes, picking up tools along the way that help us re-connect with the Divine

Consider this article a little taster for my next book that I am now writing! Won’t be out for a few years though, gotta finish it…then the whole publishing malarky takes about 13 months.
