It was the crack of dawn.
Monte lay asleep in our bed, Cowboy beside him, vowing he would get up any second now.
The minutes crept hastily towards 6am.
“Come on we have to get up!” I said crazily aware of the day we had ahead.
You see, today was to be like no other day.
Today was the day where people previously unmet in person were to come together to execute possibly the wackiest and most ambitious idea I have ever cooked up.*
Today was the day where my vision for the 2010 One Horse Town Creative Spectacular was to be played out.
I had visualised it to the last detail, now it was time to see how the vision and the reality matched up.
I was a little anxious, but mostly dead excited.
First step in execution of the plan was a trip to nearest airport (1.5 hr drive) -Â Griffith.
The Cowboy, Monte and I were heading over to pick up cast member number one for the weekend spectacular.
Name: Natasha David
Star-sign: Libra
Can be found practicing: Public Relations, kinesiology, status updates, theatre sports, comedy and blogging over at Notes From A Muse.
Home: Darlinghurst -Inner Sydney
3D meetings: Nil
2D meetings – chatted in depth sporadically over last 12 months on wide range of topics
In preparation for our trip to the big smoke in our weary condition and fight against the clock IÂ ordered two bacon and egg burgers and lattes to go – hurried some Weet-bix into Monte and we set off bound for Griffith.
As we battled the sun and talk-back radio, Monte nodded off in his seat clutching onto a toy car.
A sea of oranges signalled that we had arrived in Griffith, a text message from Natasha signalled that her plane had not yet left Sydney due to fog.
I hadn’t factored this possibility in.
I was on a schedule.
Friends were driving to the OHT from Dubbo and Mildura, I hoped the delay would only be minimal.
Following a series of frantic messaging Natasha and I began to feel a little worried.
REX Airlines gave no indication when the flight might leave and I didn’t feel we could stay much longer due to the pending guests back in the OHT.
What to do, what to do?
The pit of my stomach did a little dance.
Then Cowboy reminded me – the day of the OHT Spectacular was also the day of a Rugby League spectacular in town.
As such, there were bound to be footballing types flying in to Griffith.
I made some calls trying to find someone that may be on same flight to escort Natasha to the OHT.
This proved very trying.
As I spoke to various footballers – Monte went beserk in the backseat of the car begging to see an “Ane!”
I let him out in the car-park.
As Cowboy dashed to the bathrooms, I multi-tasked – jibbering on the phone to footballers while chasing Monte around parked cars.
Monte just kept running and running and running. I was a little puffed running while lost in conversation trying to find a rapid solution .
Little did I know just how far we had run from the car as Cowboy came out of the bathrooms with arms up as if to say “What the hell are you doing way over there?”
I picked up a ‘reluctant to come with me’ Monte and headed back to the car.
I called Natasha (for the first time verbal words were uttered, mind).
She sounded much how I imagined.
After rejoicing that it was the first time we had heard each other speak -we got down to the matter at hand – how are we going to get her to the OHT.
Natasha was very nice about it.
She understood the situation we were in and decided she would forego the footballer-companion travel option and hire a car from the airport instead.
This seemed our best bet.
We packed up a ‘dissatisfied he didn’t see an ‘ane’ Monte, and once more passed the sea of Oranges.
Text messages flooded the phone.
The rest of the cast were back in Hay, ready…
Ready to execute that crazy idea I had…
The idea that had seemed so fun and exciting – the day had arrived – for the first time I felt nervous.
My stomach started to breakdance.
Was everything going to work out as I had envisaged, or was I completely crackers?
(* idea maybe on a par with answering share accommodation ads as a way to meet men)
