Do me a favour, when you read this post, hit play on this track to get you in the mood.
Is it playing?
Ok good.
I want you to feel it in every fibre of your being. It is THE FINAL COUNTDOWN.
In SIX days time all of my training and pestering you to pledge money for the Afghan Women’s Writing Project will culminate in me taking on my nemesis: 5kms.
Today we officially hit, then exceeded $3000 , actually now up to $3100. Generous folk continue to amaze.
A FIFTH celebrity sponsor came onboard!
This time Melissa Hoyer lending her name and $100 to the cause
The weather is sweltering. The post New Years Eve Sharni is a little lethargic. The mozzies are in epidemic mode.
Today I was browsing the Afghan Women’s Writing Project site and I was introduced to one of the writers, everything flew back into perspective. As it always does when I visit.
Meet Ellaha:
Ellaha was born in Kabul but emigrated to Pakistan with her family during the Taliban period. Returning in 2005, she currently works in a charity hospital and is a member of the Afghan Women’s National Basketball Team. She believes participation in sports, rare among Afghan women, helps instill confidence and “teaches them they could be much more than who they are.”
When I read this I felt an instant meeting of the worlds. Something I have battled with reading many of the sad stories from the Afghan Women Writers.
Here I am , running, something I have loathed and felt I could not do. Through my training I am overcoming personal obstacles and yes, I am being taught that I can be more than who I am.
It is my hope that the money raised by my running will assist Afghan Women Writers to go beyond their daily struggles, to tap into a place within and realise they are so much more than what they think they are.
Please continue to support the cause. 6 days to go. $1900 more needed.
It’s the FINAL COUNTDOWN.
