Yesterday we went to the park, like we always have.
Over the last two and a bit years of your life we have gone from rolling on the grass, Â to chasing a duck trying to return it’s feather.
We’ve gone from not noticing the grandstand to climbing up it and counting the steps, even if sometimes we miss seven and nine.
I have gone from pushing you in a pram to chasing you at full pelt across the oval.
You have gone from sleeping through our visits to marvelling at the lawn mower gliding across the oval.
You have gone from not noticing the birds in the cage to doing the Hot Shoe Shuffle in their honor.
It was the same park that I no doubt rolled in, ran up and had boundless energy in. I am sure I once fed bread to the ancestors of the ducks you feed bread to.
I probably marvelled at pieces of bark from the same tree, and played hide and seek with my Mum behind its enormous trunk.
I probably said “Chase me Mum! Chase me!” and  laughed hysterically every time she did.
In two weeks this won’t be our local anymore.
There will be new parks to discover, new connections to be made and new opportunities for all of us.
The slippery dips will be bigger, the ducks could be crankier, and the surrounds less familiar.
As you ran ahead today I felt that familiar bittersweet lump develop in my throat.
I know it is time for us to run ahead with gusto and eagerly discover new and exciting things.
I also know that as we leap ahead, we will never forget to look back, fondly at where it all began.
