Don’t Ask Me To Be On The P&C

I Don't Do Slices

Today I was asked to be on the P&C.

A small part of me died.

Pardon me , dear lady, but I’m afraid the P&C is for the grown-ups. You know “Mothers”, actually I have friends whose Mothers are on P&Cs. Very involved active members they are.

Oh that bump? Yes there is a baby growing in there, – and the gorgeous little boy holding my hand — that is my three year old son.

Yes, I guess I have been a Mother for 3 years now, but you have me confused. I’m not old enough, or motherly enough to be on a P&C. For one, I’ve never cooked a slice!

Do you even cook slices? Or do you bake a slice? Is it true there are some slices you don’t cook or bake at all – they just set?

Look, I don’t know anything about them – dear lady. Nor do I attend fetes.

I can’t put pickled things into jars with pretty ribbons around them, if that is your next question either.

But yes, yes – that is correct – I would love it if my boy could start pre-school with you tomorrow.

Lunch? I need to prepare it?

No problem.

Except -  ummm what are members of the P&C packing for their children’s lunchboxes?

Do I need to bake a quiche?  Oh help,  must I learn how to bake quiches?

Will I be judged if I do not chop carrots and celery to be dipped in hummus for his morning tea?

I think you might getting a bad impression of me, dear lady, which is not my intention.

It’s not that I don’t want to help, or be involved. I am all for community spirit and being part of Monte’s education and what-not – sign me up! I’m passionate!

There are things I can do — don’t write me off just yet.

I can make up stories to tell the kids if you want?

I can make up a mean story, they’ll be laughing til their sides split. Nonscence is my specialty.

Maybe I could sing some quirky songs with them? I could take part in some general piss-farting around, but I won’t say the word piss or fart to them. Scouts honor.

Oh and you know what , dear lady, at the drop of the hat Cowboy will be there on a Saturday morning pulling out weeds from the Pre-school backyard and drilling things at the Working Bee.

Monte will love making new friends and painting and learning and reading.

We can do that. We will do that. You see we can do things!

Just please, please don’t make me an official  member of the P&C, or talk to me about slices or pickles or managing the money —

If you do get hard-up, I have friends with very capable Mothers who I’d be happy to hook you up with.

    Love it!

Our P & C is quite interesting. Of late I seem to be going for the drama. OH boy it’s a lot of fun.

Hope everyone doesn’t think that way, and I hope you change your mind later on.. You will have plenty of time to get on a P & C when Monte and Timmet start attending Primary School. It is something you can do then, and I hope you do.
It’s a bit hard on you now with a little one, and another on the way..
When you were growing up, and at Pre-School – I was Secretary of the Pre-School Kindergarten, and later @ Primary School Santa (oops, I hope you knew) at the St Marys Christmas Tree for about six years
BUT remember the words of Winston Churchill…..”We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give”.

Oh come on Dad… pffffft I wasn’t saying that I wouldn’t get involved I was just writing about where my strengths lie when it comes to helping out and’mum’ stuff! mucking around with kids, stuff like that – count me in! Making a slice, or being in charge of money — I wouldn’t put my hand up for — in the best interests of the P&C!

and it was times 100000 a tounge in cheek, light hearted post – not a message that “I refuse to be of help” — read it again, this time with a lighter heart.

Hilarious – there’s something funny about P & Cs often a joy, sometimes a chore, and certainly not for the faint hearted, they raise much needed money but often tricky if you have a lot of work to do. I’ve recently written about reinventing the stay at home mum….

I don’t know what the P&C is. Still, I remember the first time I was asked to be “Room Mother” for my 1st grader. My immediate (internal) response was: “What? Room Mother. I’m not old enough to be a Room Mother.” Of course my other-me argued back, “Well, if you’re old enough to have a 1st grader, you’re old enough to be a Room Mother.”

Oh this made me laugh, and in fact, i can relate (though I do occasionally cook the odd cake) I spend time doing things with my child at school each day. I will take him to extra corricular activities, hell I will even attend the fete and give some money, but that is about as useful as I get, between 3 active kids, a husband, a house and Uni, I struggle for time at the best of times, I do what I can.
